Dr. Kathy Rodney-Scott is a graduate of the Department of Social Sciences at Howard University in Washington, DC. She received her Bachelor of Science in Social Work, with distinction from the University of Guyana. Dr. Rodney-Scott has had a long career as a teacher/educator, community activist, and business entrepreneur. This hands-on experience with multitasking is complemented by an academic career that includes a PhD in Sociology, a Master of Arts in Sociology, and the Graduate Certificate in Women’s Studies from Howard University in the United States, and a Bachelor of Science in Social Work (earned with distinction) from the University of Guyana.

While at Howard University as a graduate assistant in the Department of Sociology and Criminology, Dr. Rodney-Scott has assisted with the planning, facilitation, and successful completion of several community projects that dealt with critical issues such as youth gun violence, domestic violence, and ex-offender re-entry. In conjunction with these community projects, as part of her Women’s Studies program, Dr. Rodney-Scott provided counselling/advocacy services at a non-profit that offered temporary shelter to survivors of domestic violence and their children.

Upon completion of her studies at Howard University, Dr. Rodney-Scott did volunteer work at two non-profit organizations. One organization provided meals to women who are homeless or living in poverty. The other offered educational classes to adult male and female learners who desired to improve their levels of education in order to gain employment.

Prior to pursuing her academic career at Howard University, Dr. Rodney-Scott was employed as a lecturer (part-time) at the University of Guyana. There she was an instructor for two third-year social work courses (1) Family Counselling and (2) Social Work in Addictions. As a professional Social Worker, she worked at the Help & Shelter Crisis Center, Georgetown as a domestic violence counsellor/public education officer. 

Prior to leaving Guyana, Dr. Rodney-Scott was a member of the Guyana Association of Professional Social Workers (GAPSW). During her membership of this professional association, (2002 – 2006) she served as an executive member of the education committee, vice-president, and president of the association.

Since her return to Guyana (2018), Dr. Rodney-Scott has lent her services as Researcher/Social Activist to individuals/organizations that are concerned with the stability of youth, young adults, women, and communities.

Dr. Rodney-Scott loves good food, good music, a good book, and a healthy laugh.
