A Global Groundings to discuss the Life and Works of Walter Rodney on the 40th anniversary of his assassination and as protests against systemic racism and injustice emerge across the globe following the murder of George Floyd.
Dr. Walter Anthony Rodney was 38 years old when he was assassinated by the Government of Guyana, in an act of state terrorism on June 13, 1980. Rodney is the author of How Europe Underdeveloped Africa, Groundings with My Brothers, The Russian Revolution, and other publications.
Contributors: Gerald Horne, Patricia Rodney, Donald Rodney, Charisse Burden-Stelly, Carole Boyce Davies, Rupert Lewis, Jesse Benjamin, Devyn Springer, and many others.
The Event began at 5:00 p.m. and ended at 8:00 p.m EST, following a moment of silence to acknowledge the precise moment when the bomb that killed Rodney was detonated.
This tribute and remembrance of Walter Rodney on the 40th Anniversary of his assassination was held to highlight his works and their continued relevance to contemporary issues - the global protests that show the ”awakening” of the US and the world to systemic racism, state oppression, police brutality, health inequities and social injustice - laid bare by COVID-19.
For those who were unable to join us, you are welcome to submit a 1-2 minute tribute video to walterrodneylegacy@gmail.com that may be shared on the Foundation’s social media channels and/or used as part of the Walter Rodney Legacy Project.
